Need Help Calculating Your Cost Per Part?
In blasting operations, the hardest abrasive is not always the most economical one.In many operations, dust cleanup, nozzle wear, and rework affect your bottom line more than the price of the media.
This guide focuses on cost per part — the number that actually matters for your profitability.
Aluminum oxide (Mohs 9) – More aggressive. Strips heavy coatings and thick rust quickly. But on thin steel or stainless surfaces, it may create a deeper surface profile than necessary, increasing the risk of additional finishing or rework. That often leads to rework or rejected parts.
Garnet (Mohs 7.5–8) – Less aggressive and easier to control. It cuts cleanly and leaves a consistent profile. Instead of shattering into fine dust instantly, garnet breaks down more gradually. That keeps dust levels stable and media consumption predictable over long blasting cycles.
Dust and cleanup – Garnet generates significantly less airborne dust in open blasting. Less dust means less time cleaning the booth and surrounding area after each shift. Better operator visibility also reduces idle time during long shifts.

Nozzle wear – Harder abrasives generally wear out blast nozzles faster. Replacing nozzles more often increases downtime and consumable spend. Garnet’s lower friability typically extends nozzle life.
Surface finish and rework – If the abrasive leaves a profile that is too deep or inconsistent, the coating may fail, or the part may need to be reblasted. Rework increases labor time, media consumption, and production cost for the same part. Garnet’s cleaner, more uniform profile helps lower rework rates.
Cost Per Part Comparison Chart
| Your priority | Better choice |
| Less dust, less cleanup, less rework | Garnet |
| Aggressive cutting in a closed recycling system | Aluminum oxide |
| Blasting stainless steel or thin metal | Garnet |
| Open blasting (e.g., ship hulls, field tanks) | Garnet |
Comparison of closed recycling system vs open-air single-use blasting
Aluminum oxide can make sense in enclosed systems where media is captured and reused many times. But in single-use, open-blast outdoor applications where media recovery is impractical, garnet’s effective cost per part is typically lower.
If you are blasting stainless steel, maintaining ships, or running high‑consumption blasting jobs, SEPPE can help you compare garnet grades and estimate your actual cost per part — not just per bag.
