Yes, waterjet garnet can be collected after cutting. That does not mean it can be treated as fresh abrasive again. For precision cutting, reuse only makes sense when the recovered material has been cleaned, dried, classified and proven by a trial cut.
This distinction matters. Many shops look for the most economical way to run a waterjet, and recycling spent garnet sounds attractive at first. But the cost saving must be compared with feed stability, cutting speed, edge quality, disposal work and mixing tube wear.

Do not approve reused garnet by color or hardness alone. Check the particle-size distribution, moisture and contamination risk first. For current SGA grades, SEPPE can provide TDS and batch documents such as COA where applicable.
Fresh waterjet garnet is selected for controlled particle size, dry flow and clean feed behavior. During cutting, the grains are accelerated by high-pressure water, pass through the mixing tube and strike the workpiece. Part of the abrasive fractures instead of simply wearing down.

The catcher tank then holds a sludgy mix of broken garnet, water, metal fines and workpiece debris. Finer particles may reduce useful cutting action and make jet lag through the thickness more noticeable. In real production, that can show up as slower cutting, more taper or rougher lower edges.

Back into waterjet cutting
Possible only with a controlled recycler, classification and a trial cut. It should not be assumed from appearance.
Downcycled use
Some recovered material may be evaluated for lower-critical blasting or filler after cleaning and screening.
Disposal or reprocessing
If the cut material creates contamination risk, disposal rules and testing come before any reuse plan.
Simple drying is not enough. It removes water, but it does not restore the original particle-size distribution. It also cannot remove all fines, oversize debris or residue from the workpiece. A usable waterjet abrasive must feed steadily and cut predictably.
This is why waterjet abrasive recycling should be judged by process results, not by the pile of spent sand. If recycled material causes unstable feed, extra operator cleaning or faster mixing tube wear, the saving on abrasive can disappear quickly.
Spent garnet disposal depends on what was cut. Stainless steel, aluminum, copper, stone, glass and composite materials can leave different residues in the catcher tank. If the workpiece may introduce regulated metals or hazardous substances, the recovered abrasive should be tested before reuse or disposal.
For US projects, the EPA TCLP method is commonly referenced for evaluating whether certain waste materials show hazardous leaching characteristics. Other countries and job sites may use different rules, so local requirements should be checked before moving spent abrasive into another application.
Before investing in waterjet abrasive recycling, many shops can reduce cost with less risk by controlling the fresh garnet supply. Keep the abrasive dry, use the correct mesh range and confirm the abrasive flow with a trial cut. Adding more garnet is not always better, and underfeeding can be just as costly.
