Abrasive waterjet cutting uses high-pressure water to accelerate garnet through a mixing tube. The resulting jet erodes the workpiece along a programmed path. It is especially useful when heat must stay out of the part, but it is not always the fastest or least expensive process.
Because the cut is formed by erosion rather than heat, waterjet avoids the heat-affected zone associated with thermal methods. This helps preserve the material beside the cut. It does not, however, eliminate setup problems: a poor pierce or weak workholding can still damage the part.
A CNC waterjet can follow curves, internal openings and nested profiles without a shaped cutting tool. A narrow kerf may also improve material use. Actual kerf width and dimensional accuracy must still be confirmed on the machine.
Water supplies the velocity; garnet performs much of the material removal. The abrasive must remain dry and feed steadily. Hardness matters, but harder is not automatically better. Oversized grains can interrupt a restricted abrasive path, while excess fines carry less useful cutting energy.

Waterjet solves heat and geometry problems, but the trade-offs appear in daily production. Cutting may be slower, abrasive is consumed continuously, and the process leaves wet waste that must be handled.

Waterjet is a strong choice when thermal change is unacceptable or the geometry is difficult for conventional tooling. A trial cut on the actual material should compare cycle time, abrasive use and the finished edge.
