When a waterjet starts feeding unevenly or producing a less consistent cut, the garnet is often blamed first. Sometimes the abrasive is part of the problem. Just as often, the cause lies elsewhere in the feed system or cutting head.
Good troubleshooting begins by separating these possibilities. Garnet quality can influence abrasive flow and cutting stability, but it cannot compensate for worn components, poor alignment or unsuitable machine settings.
Garnet has to remain dry and move steadily from the hopper to the cutting head. Moisture can make the abrasive clump before it reaches the mixing chamber. Debris or occasional oversized grains may interrupt the feed when they approach the limit of the abrasive path.
Particle distribution matters as well. A batch containing more fines or coarse grains than expected may behave differently even though the bag carries the same mesh designation. The result may appear as an unstable abrasive stream, changing consumption or inconsistent cutting performance.
Clean, dry and consistently graded garnet removes several avoidable variables from the process. It does not, however, make a worn cutting system perform like a new one.

The mixing tube is exposed to a high-speed abrasive stream and will wear during normal operation. Its service life is affected by more than abrasive quality. Water pressure, abrasive size and shape, abrasive flow rate, orifice diameter and the geometry of the cutting head all influence wear.
Alignment is also important. If the waterjet does not enter the mixing tube correctly, the stream can strike the internal wall unevenly. A worn or damaged component may therefore produce symptoms that resemble a garnet problem. Replacing the abrasive without checking the cutting head may leave the original fault unchanged.
The abrasive deserves closer attention when a problem begins after opening a new batch, particularly if the previous batch ran normally under the same settings. Visible clumps, damaged packaging or foreign material are useful warning signs. A clear change in the sieve data may also explain a difference in feeding.
Appearance alone is not enough to judge the grade. A representative sample and current particle-size data provide a stronger basis for comparison. If possible, retain a small sample from a stable batch so that a later delivery can be checked against it.
Before changing machine settings, confirm that the hopper and feed line are clean and dry. Run the current and comparison abrasives under the same cutting conditions. Watch the feed rather than relying only on the finished part, and record interruptions, abrasive use and any noticeable change in the cut.
If the problem follows one batch of garnet, investigate the abrasive and its storage history. If it continues with a known stable batch, the feed system, orifice, mixing chamber and mixing tube deserve closer inspection. This simple separation avoids changing several variables and learning nothing from the test.
