A pure waterjet is well suited to soft materials such as foam, rubber and some plastics. Cutting metal, stone, glass, ceramics or composites usually requires an abrasive. In most abrasive waterjet systems, that abrasive is garnet.
Garnet does not pass through the high-pressure pump. It enters the mixing chamber after the water leaves the jewel orifice, then accelerates through the mixing tube. The water supplies the speed; the garnet grains erode the workpiece.
A waterjet abrasive has a demanding job. It must be hard enough to cut, dense enough to carry energy and tough enough to reach the workpiece without breaking down too early. Garnet offers a practical balance between cutting performance and mixing-tube wear.
The hardest abrasive is not always the best choice. A more aggressive mineral may cut quickly but wear the mixing tube faster. A weak or poorly processed abrasive may break down before it contributes useful cutting.

Alluvial pink garnet can meet these needs, but mineral origin alone does not predict performance. After washing, screening and drying, particle-size distribution, moisture and batch consistency determine how the abrasive feeds through the machine.
For many waterjet systems, 80 mesh is the practical starting point. It offers a useful balance between cutting rate and edge quality. The cutting-head manufacturer’s specification should still come first.
A finer grade may suit a narrow kerf or a more controlled edge. A coarser grade cuts more aggressively but needs a compatible mixing tube. Material, thickness, cutting-head geometry, pressure, abrasive flow and the required finish all affect the choice.
An 80 mesh grade is a controlled size range, not one identical particle diameter. Products with the same label can still differ in fines, oversized grains and overall distribution. Review the sieve data, then confirm performance with a trial cut.

Start with the mesh range recommended for the cutting head. Keep the abrasive sealed and dry, check that the hopper and screen are clean, and confirm the size and measured flow rate in the machine settings.
Test a new supply on familiar material under recorded conditions. Compare cut speed, edge condition and feeding stability. Judge the garnet by the result on the machine, not the bag price alone.
