Two garnet lots can have a similar colour yet feed differently through the same waterjet. Colour is easy to compare, but it is not proof of purity or cutting performance. A useful incoming check begins with the batch documents and ends with a controlled trial cut.
Ask for the product specification and a batch COA when available. Confirm that the stated grade matches the order. For 80 mesh waterjet garnet, the particles fall within a controlled size distribution. They are not all the same diameter.
Review the reported size data for excessive fines or oversize grains. Check any applicable moisture and cleanliness results as well. A technical data sheet describes typical product properties, while the COA reports results for the relevant batch.
Take a representative sample rather than judging the lot from the surface of one bag. Use the following observations as an initial screen:
Packaging and moisture: Look for damaged or damp bags. Hard clumps may indicate moisture exposure and require closer review.
Colour: Use it to compare samples, not to judge purity. Mineral origin and processing can both change the appearance, so redder garnet is not automatically better.
Jar rinse: Use it only as a quick screen for visible fines or surface residue. Water clarity cannot replace sieve data or predict cutting performance.
Test the sample on a familiar material and cutting program. Do not change the machine setup between samples. Use the same pressure, abrasive flow and traverse speed, then compare feed stability and the finished edge.
Record whether the cut is complete and inspect the lower edge for any change in striation. Actual abrasive use also matters. Unstable feeding or a rougher edge does not always point to the garnet. Check the system in this order:
Check the abrasive feed path for moisture or a restriction.
Inspect the orifice and mixing tube for wear.
Verify the cutting-head alignment.

Use the batch documents as the starting point. Confirm the condition on arrival, then finish with a controlled trial cut. Keep a retained sample with the lot number so later changes can be compared with the material that was originally approved.
